Enjoy an early example of cross-cultural exchange. Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), called “Lang Shining” in Chinese, was a native of Milan, Italy. By the time he became a Jesuit at age 19, he already excelled at painting and architecture. At 27, he journeyed to China as a missionary and was summoned to the Imperial Court, where he served under the Kangxi, Yongzhang and Qianlong emperors.

The original work this scroll is modeled on depicts horses painted with Western brushwork and colors, reflecting Castiglione's initial training in Italy.
